There are various views about who wrote the Letter to the Hebrews– Paul, Luke, Clement, Barnabas, etc.1 –but, really, we don’t know who the author was.

One idea is that perhaps we aren’t supposed to know who wrote the Letter to the Hebrews. A large part of the letter tells us that Jesus is the pinnacle of God’s plan (the letter stresses that Jesus is better than the angels (e.g. ch. 1), better than Moses (e.g. ch. 3), better than Aaron and the Levitical priests (e.g. ch. 4:14-5:10), etc.): perhaps the author of the letter is staying anonymous to further demonstrate that Jesus is the most important thing — the author of the letter doesn’t matter; the Lord Jesus matters, so focus on him.

{2} looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. {3} Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted (Heb. 12:2-3)
