The phrase ‘the meek shall inherit the earth’ is from Psalm 37:11. Partly, the psalm is about how wicked people will be destroyed but that God’s people will receive the earth as a gift from God. Ultimately, God will take steps towards this when he sends Jesus back to the earth to bring his kingdom here (just as Christians pray to God saying, “Your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” [Mat. 6:10]). At that time there will be a judgement, with wicked people being excluded from the kingdom and God’s people being welcomed in (see Mat. 25:31ff). Jesus will say the following to God’s people: ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world’ (Mat. 25:34) and then those people will rule over the earth with Christ (Rev. 20:6).
