What makes something right or wrong?

girl deciding

Is it decided by:

  • our own ideas?

  • popular opinion?

  • the majority view?

  • Governments

All of these views are based on Human ideas. Popular opinion and majority views come from individuals or groups who have influence to make their views heard.

Different cultures have developed over time different ideas about right and wrong

Opinions therefore change over time in particular cultures, as the people driving the ideas change.

Right and wrong concept

For example there are differences in attitudes to:

  • climate change
  • gender
  • sexual relationships
  • honour killings
  • human slavery
  • capital punishment
  • respect for authority

So maybe the human race is not capable of finally deciding what is right or wrong?

Lady reading Bible

The Bible tells us that we are not capable of deciding how to live and casts doubt on

our own judgements:

O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.                                                                                                                                    Jeremiah 10 v 23

It provides a warning when we trust in our own ideas:

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.      Proverbs 16 v 25

We need a source for guidance with more wisdom that we have. The Bible claims to give such guidance:

For the word of the LORD is right, And all His work is done in truth.                    Psalm 33 v 4

There is solid evidence to believe this claim. Look at the section What is the evidence that the Bible is special?

  • The Bible is our guide to what is right or wrong.
