At times of sorrow we can find comfort from God if we pray to him. But it is true that God may be testing us at such times in the hope that our characters will be strengthened by the things that we suffer. Paul was able to say

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

And Peter says to the followers of Christ

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. (1 Peter 4:12-13)

  2. Rev. Christopher M Rodrick says:

God is light and in Him is no darkness.
God does not put us to a test. However, our faith in God will be tested by the devil. God may permit the devil to test us and He will make a way for us to overcome every test that Jesus be glorified.

    Be blessed.

God says in Isaiah 45:5 – 7 that he is the only God, the one who creates both light and darkness, both well-being and calamity. It says in Deuteronomy 8:2 that he tested the people of Israel in the wilderness.

  3. Chris says:

Why wiuld a “Rev” say God doesn’t test. He should read his Bible more ….. ” Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.” Genesis 22:1-3

  4. Jana Lee says:

    1 Thessalonians 2:4 (NKJV)

4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.

  5. vusimuzi nhlapo says:

God does not tempt us! He does not use evil to test us (James 1:13).
God just allows us to act on His Word — which is more than enough to put us
    over — to overcome evil.

Does God use the devil to teach us, correct us, and discipline us? No — not
any more than a good human parent would — or does.

Another reason I thought God does not test us was because then we would not
know when to resist the devil and when to submit to God. However, God’s
tests are different than the temptations and trials of the devil. God’s
test is whether we act on His Word, trusting Him.

We should always stand in faith, and resist the devil and his works.
God’s Word always works — but not always instantly. From when we take our stand
on God’s Word to when the answer manifests, constitutes the test.
