And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. (Matthew 11:23)
When Jesus said, “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?”, he was not suggesting that the city would rise up into the skies, but he was using an idiom that indicated that the people of the city were much too proud. They rejected Jesus even when they knew he had performed miracles there. Jesus warned them that their pride would result in a big fall at the time of judgment. As always, there would be the opportunity to find the way of salvation if they repented and believed in Jesus Christ.
