Bible Q

Why did God know, but Jesus not know, the day of his return? (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32)

The question relates to Jesus’ clear statement that he did not know the day of his return:

Matthew 24:36 No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.

Mark 13:32 No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.

This really does not require any further explanation other than John 5:20 which occasionally has been misread and misquoted (truncated) to challenge Jesus’ statements above. But the full text and context shows very clearly that the “showeth Him all things” of John 5:20 is in full “which He doeth”, present tense. Not all of the future.

John 5:19-20 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.

This is important because just as Jesus would not be human and tempted like his brethren (Hebrews 2:14-18, 4:15, 5:7-9) if he had a memory of the past, and likewise so he would not be if he knew the future.
