What can we say about the Trinitarian argument “if Jesus is not truly God, he cannot save”?
There are so many versions of this claim that this answer might later be expanded by addressing different variants of the claim in different sections,
But fundamentally the problem is a misunderstanding of who actually has the power to save men – and that is God himself, who saved Jesus.
Hebrews 5:7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.( NIV)
God having first saved his only begotten son, the man Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ (the Messiah, the anointed king), it then becomes possible for other men, who unlike Jesus are sinners, to also be saved through him, and through Jesus’ life:
Romans 5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!
Romans 5:10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
And so on.
