When we die, we go to the grave.  People and animals both have a ‘breath of life’ which belongs to God, and returns to him at death, while the person or animal goes to the grave:  Genesis 2:7; 7:21-22; Job 34:14-15; Ecclesiastes 3:19-20.  No one went to heaven at death: John 3:13; Acts 2:29, 34-35.

Death is the end of all life and thought: Psalm 6:5; 49:14-15; 104:29, 115:17; 146:3-4; Ecclesiastes 3:19-20; 9:5-6, 10; 12:7, Isaiah 38:9-10,18-19.

For this reason, death is called a ‘sleep’, a lack of consciousness: Deuteronomy 31:16; Job 7:21; Psalm 13:3; Daniel 12:2; Matthew 9:24; Mark 5:39; Luke 8:52; John 11:11; 1 Corinthians 15:51.

There is only one hope for life and reward after death, and that is resurrection: Job 19:26-27; Daniel 12:1-2; Luke 14:14-15; John 5:28-29; 11:23-24; Acts 4:1-2; 24:15; Hebrews 6:1-2; 11:35,39-40; Philippians 3:10-11.

There is only one reward for the faithful — the Kingdom of God: Matthew 5:3, 10; 7:21; 13:40-43; 19:28-29; 25:8-10, 31-34; Mark 15:43; Luke 6:20; 12:32; 23:39-42, 51; Acts 14:22; 2 Thessalonians 1:5; James 2:5.

The Kingdom of heaven is God’s Kingdom on earth, which comes from God in heaven at the return of Christ when he will judge the good and the wicked: Matthew 13:47-50; 20:1-16; 22:2-13; 25:1-30.
