Bible Q

What does the Bible say about the ancestry of Jesus?

Jesus was the son of God and Mary:

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus… 35 And the angel answered [Mary], “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. (Luke 1:30-31,35)

The gospels give two genealogies of Jesus, one in Matthew 1 and one in Luke 3. The genealogy in Luke 3:23-38 is usually thought to be that of Mary, and includes well-known Bible characters such as David, Ruth, Jacob, Isaac, Abraham and Noah. The genealogy in Matthew 1:1-16 is through Joseph, Jesus’ step-father, and also goes back through David.
