It is well-known that John 3:16 is the most translated and quoted verse in the Bible:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The website topverses.com recently ranked the verses of the Bible by how often they are cited on-line. Here is their top ten in order of popularity.
- John 3:16
- John 1:1
- John 14:6
- Matthew 28:19
- Romans 3:23
- Ephesians 2:8
- Genesis 1:1
- Acts 1:8
- 2 Timothy 3:16
- Romans 10:9
Some famous ones there, but nine out of ten from the New Testament and none about the kingdom of God! This reflects two biases in modern Christianity:
- neglect of the Old Testament (after all, you can’t understand the New Testament without it); and
- emphasis on only one half of the gospel (the name of Jesus Christ) and neglect of the other half (the kingdom of God).
You forgot to mention Matthew 7:1!
That verse did not make it to the top ten most cited on-line. In fact, it is number 179.
