Detailed question:
Is there and where is it found pertaining to bringing world things into the church. Our fellowship hall is not big enough to show christian based movies in and seat everyone. We have a projector in the church sanctuary and have shown these in there. I would like to know if there is scripture pertaining to this.
What is “the world”?
1Jn 2:16-17 For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world. (17) And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Desires of the flesh and of the eyes, and pride in possessions are the things that we are told not to bring into church. That is because it is these things that are the “world”. Anything that feeds those evil things should not be brought into the church. Conversely anything that encourages us to do the will of God is good and should be brought into the church. The church is not a building but a group of people. A church may meet in a church hall or in a house or under a tree. Perhaps this would be clearer to us if we used another word instead of “church” to avoid us thinking of the church as being the building. Alternatives are “congregation” or even “ecclesia” which is the Latinised form of the Greek word translated “church”.
Scripture likens the “church” or “congregation” to a building made of stones which represent his people.
1Pe 2:4-6 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, (5) you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (6) For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
A LIVING STONE = CHRIST
LIVING STONES = CHRISTIANS
THE SPIRITUAL HOUSE = THE CONGREGATION
This “house” has as its foundation stone Jesus Christ. However the building that we might use to meet in is not itself the church.
