There are two reasons why we die:

  1. We sin, and the “wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
  2. We inherit mortality (Romans 5:17).

Since Jesus did not sin (Hebrews 4:15), only the second of these applied to him. That is, he inherited mortality because he was human.

However, because he did not sin, and lived a faithful and righteous life, it was not right for him to remain dead:

God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. (Acts 2:24)

  1. sarah says:

are we told though that you die because you inherit mortality?

    • Rob J Hyndman says:

      See Romans 5:12-17 and 1 Corinthians 15:21-22.

Also, there is the simple observation that babies die before they sin.

  2. Ivan C says:

Jesus said in my own words” no one takes away my life, I give it away. I have the authority to give it away and I have the authority to take it back. That’s the commandment that I received from my Father.

Also on the cross Jesus said Father in Your hands I give my spirit and then died.

Have you seen anyone that can say that and actually die without any physical help? That’s why the centurion when he heard Jesus say that and that He died from His own will and the earthquake that happened afterwards said” surly He was the son of God.

Jesus willingly died it wasn’t sin that took His life. Everything He did was willingly for you and me.
