The Apostle Paul tells us that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God was willing to give his son for us, however sinful we had become. But when we hear about God and the sacrifice of Jesus, how do we respond? Jesus tells us that:
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. John 15:10
So, if we sin against God, we do become less lovable. In particular, we become less lovable to Jesus and God his father (see also John 14:23-24, John 15:14 and Hebrews 10:26-27, 29-31). If we sin deliberately, we are rejecting the love God has shown.
It is very important to God that we choose his way in our life. God will forgive our sins if we repent (1 John 1:9-10), but sin always makes us less lovable and we must keep away from it at all costs. He sent his son to turn us from sin.
Jesus did not condemn the woman who was caught in the act of adultery, but he did say “go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:11).
